Active Schools

What is Active Schools?

Active Schools Ireland is an initiative aimed at promoting physical activity and a healthy lifestyle among school children . It encourages schools to integrate more physical activity into the daily lives of students by creating a more active environment, incorporating fun physical exercises into the school day, and engaging the entire school community, including staff, students, and parents.

The goal is to help children achieve the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity per day, which has been linked to improved health, concentration, and well-being. Schools that participate in the programme can apply for and receive the Active School Flag, which acknowledges their efforts to promote an active lifestyle.

Our PE Timetable

Physical Education is required to be taught for 1 hour per week. The 6 strands are athletics, dance, games, gymnastics, outdoor and adventure and aquatics with water safety (Land Paws) being taught in the classroom.

As a school we take a whole school approach to PE.

  • PE is timetabled for 1 hour each week.
  • All classes are taught all strands each year.
  • This year we are working together to strengthen the delivery of the outdoor and adventure strand.
  • PE is included in end of year reports for students.
  • All teachers use the Move Well Move Often resources to aid in teaching of Fundamental Movement Skills in P.E
  • Our P.E equipment is varied and easily accessible.

School Activities

Here at Passage East National School we incorporate as many different physical activities into our school year as possible. Here are just a few examples-

Just dance breaks. We have an active break at 10AM each day for 10 minutes.

‘Feel good Fridays’ involves participating in a fun activity, such as exploring our local coastline.

Golfing in Faithlegg Golf club.

St. Anne’s Tennis Club paid a visit to our school and provided us with tennis coaching.

We do ‘Walk on Wednesdays’  on the first Wednesday of every month. We all take part in a Walk to School.

Our school hurling team.
